Is Vaping Better than Smoking?

Is Vaping Better than Smoking?

Vaping is believed to be 95% safer than smoking. But convincing that to anyone beyond a shadow of a doubt would require concrete scientific evidence supporting the claim.

The estimate that vaping is 95% safer than smoking was drawn jointly by the Public Health England and Tobacco Advisory Committee through a series of comprehensive reviews of the evidence.

The same number was found erstwhile by a coterie of international experts headed by Professor David Nutt in 2014.

What the 95% Figure Is Based On

The tar, CO, and thousands of other toxins produced from burning tobacco are what make cigarettes so harmful. Unlike cigarettes, a vaporizer does not produce all of these toxins because it heats the e-liquid without combustion. Hence, this is what makes a vaporizer different from a cigarette.

Out of the 7,000 chemicals released from a burning cigarette, at least 69 of them are cancerous. And in vapor (emitted by vaporizers), most of these chemicals are absent. Those chemicals that are present are at low concentrations, mostly less than 1% of the level they are in smoke. Hence, the lesser the number of toxins, the lesser the health risks.

Using Vapes to Quit Smoking

A combined evaluation of series of studies indicate that vaping is a better alternative to quit smoking than replacement therapies such as patches or gums. Even the Food and Drug Administration deemed vapes to be less harmful than traditional cigarettes.

Not just that, but vaping is also cheaper. According to an estimate, smoking 5 cigarettes a day can cost you around $200 a month. If you were to switch to vapes, it would cost you a mere $16 a month.

A study carried out in 2021 found that smokers that switched to vaping had 8 times more probability of quitting smoking than smokers who never vaped. The study found that 28% of the smokers that used vaporizers daily stopped smoking tobacco completely. 45.5% of them stopped smoking daily.

How to Choose the Right Vape

So, if you’ve decided to switch to vaping for good, you’d need to know where to begin.

  • Light smokers can start with a vape pen or a pod system.
  • If you’re a heavy smoker, you can start with a higher amount of nicotine in your vape, so that it’s more convenient to ease your way into vaping.

Your local vape shop can help you with choosing the right vape for yourself.

  • How safe are vapes?

Vaporizers do not contain Tar or Carbon Monoxide, which are two of the most harmful substances in tobacco. The vapor from vaporizers does contain some harmful chemicals, but at much lower levels in contrast to cigarettes.

  • Is vapor from vapes harmful to others?

So far, there is no evidence that suggests that the vapor from the vape is harmful to others around you. However, you will find plentiful of evidence that indicates that secondhand smoke from cigarettes is detrimental to others.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) confirmed that out of half of smokers that take up a resolution to quit smoking, only 6% are successful. Hence, it boils down to your steadfastness to choose whether to smoke or vape. The latter is strongly advised, as it is an economical and easy way to indulge in leisure.
